June 14 in Nerd History

Here are 5 things that happened on June 14 that matter to those of us who just name old sports people and have the best time.

I.

Birthdays of honor: Burl Ives (1909), Boy George (1961), Yasmine Bleeth (1968), Jerzy Kosiński (1933).

II.

In 1989 Zsa Zsa Gabor was arrested for slapping a police officer. She was pulled over (in her Rolls Royce no less) for expired tags but pulled away. When she was pulled over by the same officer again, well, it was the slap heard ’round the world. There was also an open flask of Jack Daniels, which certainly had nothing to do with anything…

The trial would become one of the early celebrity trials to receive mass media attention — a precursor to the obsession around O.J. Simpson’s murder trial a few years later.

III.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, hit theaters in 1991. The lack of Kevin Costner’s accent didn’t bother a single damn person.

And The Cable Guy was definitely not the typical lighthearted Jim Carey movie I was expecting when it came out on this day in 1996.

IV.

In 1989 Tetris came out for the Game Boy in Japan, eventually leading to me playing approximately 17,000 hours of it on summer road trips.

V.

In 1959, a few weeks ahead of Disneyland’s opening day, the Disneyland Monorail System opened to the public in Anaheim. It was the first daily operating monorail in the Western Hemisphere.
