RIP The Iron Sheik

RIP The Iron Sheik

Happy National Upsy Daisy Day! I’m not totally sure what that means, but I’d say go ahead and say “upsy daisy” as often as you can — going up the stairs, picking up your cat, literally any chance you get.

This is The Reset Button from Classic Nerd, resetting your day.

June 8 in Nerd History

Here are 5 things that happened on June 8 that matter to those of us who remember The Iron Sheik as the ultimate heel — in a good way.

I.

Birthdays of honor: Jerry Stiller (1927), Tim Berners-Lee (1955), Keenen Ivory Wayans (1958), Joan Rivers (1933), Nancy Sinatra (1940).

II.

It was one hell of a day at the theaters in 1984 for movies that fit certain holidays but came out in summer. Both Ghostbusters and Gremlins hit theaters on this day that year.

III.

Keeping in mind the above in regards to what 1984 was actually like, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four was published on this day in 1949. It was Orwell’s ninth and final book of his lifetime.

IV.

Blue Öyster Cult released Agents of Fortune in 1976, featuring the song “Don’t Fear the Reaper” — there’s just one thing the song is missing…

V.

Now THAT’S a sequel: Chances are on this day in 1988 you were at the movies watching Crocodile Dundee II, which was crushing the early-summer box office.
