Which state enacted the first speed limit law?

50 years ago, the National Maximum Speed Limit (NMSL) meant that nowhere in the United States were you legally allowed to drive faster than 55 miles per hour.

But apparently nobody told one Sammy Hagar, who found out the hard way when about 10 years later he was cruising down the highway at a scorching 62 MPH, only to receive a speeding ticket. Hopefully, the royalties from the song he wrote about that experience were enough to pay it off.

If Hagar's looking for a sequel to "I Can't Drive 55", he needs to look no further than the first state in the USA that introduced a speed limit law. Which tyrannical state took this first step against Sammy Hagar's freedom?
